Ordained a priest of the diocese of Luçon, France on 19 September 1789. Refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Civil Constitution of the Clergy put forth by the government during the French Revolution, and along with 233 other priests, went into exile in Spain on 9 September 1792. On 17 August 1797 he returned to France, living in hiding and ministering to Catholics for two years until the return of freedom of worship in 1799. Founded a seminary in 1801. Founded the Congregation of the Sons of Mary Immaculate and the Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Jesus of Chavagnes.
