One of seven children, locals remember him as a boy who loved to swim, play sports, worked at a drug store soda counter, and would walk a mile each morning to serve as altar boy at Mass. Diocesan priest, ordained in 1957. Missionary to Korea. Founded the Sisters of Mary in 1964 in Busan, Korea to house, educate and train orphans and street children, and the Brothers of Christ in Seoul, South Korea in 1981 to work with the poor and disabled; the Brothers and Sisters continue their good work today in Korea, the Philippines and Mexico. Twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and once for the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Known for a devotion to the rosary and Eucharistic adoration, and for the joyful way he suffered through the ALS that eventually killed him.
