The Holiness of the Church in the Nineteenth Century – Blessed Ignatius Delgado

detail of a portrait of Saint Clemente Ignacio Delgado Cebrián, date and artist unknown; swiped from Santi e BeatiArticle

The Blessed Ignatius Delgado had labored for Christ in Tonkin during the same term of years as Blessed Dominic Henares and only a few days later also received the crown of glory. He had been vicar-apostolic of eastern Tonkin since 1799 and under his administration Christianity had made great progress. This old man of seventy-six years was so grievously tortured that he succumbed under his sufferings before the approval of his death sentence arrived. With these two Dominican bishops was also imprisoned the Dominican provincial, Blessed Joseph Fernandez, who was beheaded on 24 July 1838.
