Papal legate to the Council of Constantinople in 869, representing Pope Adrian II while still a deacon. Bishop of Crere. Vatican treasurer. Archdeacon. Chosen 108th pope in 882. He condemned Photius. Due to regard for King Alfred, he freed the Anglo-Saxons in Rome from tax and tribute. Due to the similarity between the names Marinus and Martinus some historians called him Pope Martin II.
