Little is known of his early life. Elected 88th pope in 708. During the first years of his papacy, Rome suffered through famine. He asserted the supremacy of the Vatican over the Church. In 709 he travelled to Constantinople to Emperor Justinian II who had convened a council which established customs contrary to the Latin Church. Following several confrontations and negotiations, he approved those customs that had no effect on theology or morals. Opposed a resurgence of the Monothelist heresy and the Monothelite emperor, Philippicus Bardanes, who deposed Justinian II.
