Martyr, King of Denmark, died island of Fünen, 1086. Elected c.1080, he ruled wisely, waged war on his barbarous enemies, brought Courland and Livonia to the Faith, and was remarkable for his piety and devotion to the Church. He was murdered by rebels in the church of Saint Alban. Emblems: a lance, arrows. Canonized, 1171. Relics in Denmark. Feast, Roman Calendar, 19 January.
