New Catholic Dictionary – Saint Avitus


(Alcimus Ecdicius) (c.451525) Poet, Bishop of Vienne, born Vienne (now France). He opposed Arianism and advocated papal authority as the main bulwark of religious unity. He is the author of a poem dealing with the scriptural narrative of original sin, expulsion from paradise, the Deluge, and crossing of the Red Sea; Milton made use of this in preparing Paradise Lost. Relics at Vienne. Feast, 5 February.
