[Saint Andrew Bobola]

Jesuit martyr, born Sandomir, Poland, 1590; died Janow, 1657. He was superior at Bobruisk, where he distinguished himself during the plague. His success in converting schismatics, in the Lithuanian mission, led to his torture and martyrdom by the Cossacks. Feast, Russia, Galicia, and Posnania, 16 May; in Poland, 21 February.
