New Catholic Dictionary – Saint Aldhelm


(c.639-709) Confessor, abbot of Malmesbury, Bishop of Sherborne. He was an able administrator and one of the first Englishmen to cultivate classical learning with success. His chief prose work was a treatise in praise of virginity. He built the still-existing chapel of Saint Lawrence, Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire. Feast, 25 May.
