- Hebrew: God has healed
Archangel and saint. One of the three angels mentioned by name in Holy Scripture (see also Gabriel and Michael). This mention of Raphael occurs in the Book of Tobias, chapters 5-11. According to his own words he is of the seven angels who stand before the Lord (Tobias 12; Apocalypse 8). Hence with Saint Michael and Saint Gabriel, he is ranked in the choir of Seraphim and the name archangel when applied to these three has the generic meaning of an angel of high rank. Some identify Raphael as the angel who stirred the waters at the Probatic pool (John 5:4). Feast, 24 October.
