Son of the Earl of Abingdon and a direct descendent of the Stuart line of English monarchs; related to Queen Elizabeth II. Educated at the Benedictine Ampleforth College in northern England. Graduated in Modern History from Christ Church College, Oxford University. Studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, England. Served in the Scots Guard from 1948 to 1950, becoming a commissioned officer in 1949. Joined the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in 1956. Taught French, Spanish, Russian, Tibetan and Sanskrit at Worth Abbey School in Sussex, England from 1960 to 1983. Held a black belt in judo. Active amateur fencer. Worked with the children at his school, and led pilgrimages to Lourdes, France. Took his solemn vows in the Order in 1981, was elected to its governing board in 1983, and served as the Grand Master of the Order from 1988 until his death, the first Englishman ever so chosen. Generous, charitable, eccentric and pious, he would never take credit for any of his good works. His Cause for Canonization has begun.
