Born to a wealthy family, in high school Károly felt a call to the priesthood. Ordained in 1876 in the archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest, Hungary. Worked six years as a village parish priest, and then was assigned to Budapest, a growing city with a shortage of priests. Parish priest, taught religion in local high schools, preached and wrote against rising anti–Church sentiment among the liberal political movement. Twice refused the offer of consecration as bishop. His Cause for Canonization has begun.
