Born to a wealthy family, in high school Károly felt a call to the priesthood. Ordained in 1876 in the archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest, Hungary. Worked six years as a village parish priest, and then was assigned to Budapest, a growing city with a shortage of priests. Parish priest, taught religion in local high schools, preached and wrote against rising anti-Church sentiment among the liberal political movement. Twice refused the offer of consecration as bishop.
