Daniel studied at Saint Ignatius College, and in 1909 entered the Jesuit Saint Stanilaus Seminary in Florissant, Missouri. He earned a degree in philosophy from Saint Louis University, and taught Englsh from there 1917 to 1920. Ordained a priest in 1923, he made his Jesuit profession in 1925. National director of the Sodality of Our Lady and editor of its magazine, The Queen’s Work from 1926 to 1948; he revitalized the Sodality, which had been a dying organization. One of the consultants for the 1927 DeMille film King of Kings. The draft code of production conduct that the wrote in 19291930 became the core of the Hays Production Code which governed on-screen behavior in most large studio films from 1934 to 1959. He wrote 90+ books, over 300 pamphlets, as well as plays, musicals, songs, articles, and the column Along the Way for Our Sunday Visitor for many years. He wrote spiritual, educational and apologetic works as well as extensively on modern racial, economic and political matters.
