(Rhabanus) (February 4) (Blessed) Bishop (9th century) An Archbishop of Mainz, and one of the most erudite men of his century. His life, both as monk and Abbot of Fulda, and afterwards as the most prominent Prelate in Germany, was such as to attract to him the homage and veneration of all. He died A.D. 856, leaving us valuable Commentaries on the Scriptures and other learned works, the composition of which argues undeniable talent and perseverance in view of the semi-civilised surroundings in which he lived.
