(Saint) Bishop, Martyr (September 23) (6th century) The Roman Martyrology assigns Coutances in Normandy as the place of the death of this Saint Paternus, but it would seem erroneously. It is also likely that he should not be described as a Martyr. The Bollandists identify him with Saint Paternus of Avranches of April 16 (which see). The mistake, if there be one in the Roman record, originated with the old writer, Usuardus.
