(Saint) Abbot (January 11) (4th century) One of the earliest of the Egyptian hermits. He took refuge in Upper Egypt during the persecution under Diocletian, and there passed a long life in the practices of austerity and in the study of Holy Scripture. He died in the arms of Saint Pachomius, the best beloved of his disciples, A.D. 325.
