(Saint) Bishop (July 2) (12th century) Bishop of Bamberg and Apostle of Pomerania. Born of noble parents in South Germany, he by his talents obtained great influence at the Court of the hapless Henry IV and did much to stifle the schism which that Prince, by the appointment of Anti-Popes, sought to set up. Besides his successful Pastorate at Bamberg, he, invited by the King of Poland, who had conquered Pomerania, made two missionary journeys to that province, and practically converted its population to Christianity. Saint Otho died at Bamberg, June 30, A.D. 1139.
