(Saint) Abbot (January 1) (11th century) A French Saint, Abbot of the famous Benedictine monastery of Cluny, and distinguished for the exceeding gentleness of his rule and for the great holiness to which, taught and encouraged by him, his disciples attained. He introduced into the Calendar of the Church the beautiful annual commemoration of the Faithful Departed, known as All Souls’ Day. He passed away in the night of the New Year, A.D. 1049.
