(Saint) Abbot (November 12) (5th century) A learned Eastern monk, surnamed by his contemporaries “Sapiens” or the Wise. He made his home with the Solitaries of Mount Sinai and emerged into public life mainly as a supporter of the persecuted Saint John Chrysostom. Most of his works, which are chiefly ascetic, are still extant. He died at Constantinople some time after A.D. 430.
