(Melchno) (Saint) Bishop (February 6) (5th century) One of the earliest of the Irish Saints. He was a nephew of Saint Patrick, and by him appointed first Bishop of Ardagh. There Saint Mel built a great monastery and governed it as Abbot. It was he who gave the veil of religion to Saint Brigid. He lived till towards the close of the fifth century. Ardagh Diocese venerates him as its Patron Saint.
