Book of Saints – Martyrs of Alexandria – 17 March


ALEXANDRIA (MARTYRS OF) (March 17) (4th century) A multitude of Christians massacred by the Pagan devotees of Serapis on their refusal to join in the idolatrous worship offered in his temple. This was the work of a riotous mob (A.D. 390) during the reign of the Christian Emperor Theodosius, who thereupon destroyed the temple and had a Christian church built upon its site.
