Book of Saints – Martial

Article

(Saint) Bishop (June 30) (Date uncertain) The first Bishop of Limoges, and, according to Saint Gregory of Tours, one of the seven missionary bishops sent from Rome to preach the Gospel in Gaul in the middle of the third century. His field of work was the country round Limoges, where his memory is held in great veneration. A life of Saint Martial by Bishop Aurelian, his successor, is now regarded as spurious; but from the account it gives has arisen the popular belief that Saint Martial was sent to Gaul by Saint Peter himself, that he had been one of the seventy-two disciples chosen as missionaries by Our Lord, that he waited on Christ and His Apostles at the Last Supper, etc.
