Book of Saints – Mammas

(Saint) Martyr (August 17) (3rd century) The Acta of this Saint are obscure and uncertain. He is said to have been of noble birth. Some even describe him as having been a Roman Senator; but both Saint Basil and Saint Gregory Nazianzen refer to him as having been of humble birth. The Bollandists are of opinion that two distinct Martyrs of the same name are at times confounded by the various writers. It seems likely that the Saint Mammas in special veneration suffered martyrdom at Caesarea in Cappadocia under Aurelian (A.D. 274).
