(Saint) (November 23) (13th century) An illustrious Saint of the Order of the Hermits of Saint Augustine, born at Mantua (A.D. 1168). After leaving that city, he settled as a hermit at Cesena on the coast of the Adriatic, and gathered disciples about him. Pope Innocent IV placed the Institute under the Rule of Saint Augustine. Saint John died (A.D. 1249) at Mantua, where, at the urgent request of his fellow-citizens, he had founded one of his monasteries. He was canonised in the fifteenth century by Pope Sixtus IV.
