EUGENE III (Blessed) Pope (July 8) (12th century) A French Cistercian Abbot, disciple of Saint Bernard, who on account of his saintly character was elected Pope (A.D. 1145) in very troublous times. He governed the Church wisely, promoted the Second Crusade, and died A.D. 1153, the same year as his holy master, Saint Bernard.
