(Saint) Abbot (November 29) (6th century) Sometimes called Saint Brendan the Elder to distinguish him from his namesake, the still more celebrated Saint Brendan of Clonfert, his contemporary and fellow-disciple with him of Saint Finnian of Clonfert. His Abbey of Birr was somewhere near Parsonstown in King’s County. He was the great friend and adviser of Saint Columba, who in a vision saw the holy soul of Saint Brendan carried by angels to Heaven at the moment of his passing away (A.D. 562).
