BIRINUS (Saint) Bishop (December 3) (7th century) A missionary sent by Pope Honorius to convert the West Saxons to Christianity, and consecrated Bishop by Asterius, Bishop of Genoa. One of his first converts was King Cynegils of Wessex, at whose baptism another monarch, Saint Oswald of Northumbria, officiated as godfather. Saint Birinus died at Dorchester in Oxfordshire, where he had fixed his Episcopal See, A.D. 650, whence Bishop Hedda translated his body to the Church of Saint Peter at Winchester (A.D. 686).
