Profile

Paul worked as a plumber, then joined the army and served as a paratrooper officer in Algeria. In his 40’s, Paul followed a call to religious life and joined the Trappists in 1984. He moved to the Atlas Abbey of Tibhirine near Médéa, Algeria in 1989 and set up an irrigation system for their gardens. He had just returned from a family visit in France, bringing a supply of spades and young beech trees to be planted when he and six other monks kidnapped over the night of 26–27 March 1996 during the Algerian Civil War. They were held captive for two months, then murdered for being Christian. Martyr.
