[Spoken of by Saint Gregory Nyssen, her grandson, in his life of his sister Macrina. Saint Gregory Nazianzen gfives a fuller account in his life of her grandson, Saint Basil the Great.]

In the persecution of Galerius, A.D. 304, Saint Macrina and her husband were obliged to hide till the tyranny was over, in a wooded mountain in Pontus, for seven years, suffering severely from cold and from insufficiency of food. They were, however, able to catch and kill wild deer.
