Ordained on 9 June 1962. Member of Saint Joseph’s Society of the Sacred Heart. Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, DC and Titular Bishop of Walla Walla on 12 July 1974. Archbishop of Atlanta, Georgia from 14 March 1988 until his retirement on 10 July 1990; he was the first black Catholic archbishop in the United States. Chaplain at the Sisters of Mercy convent in Alma, Michigan from 1990 until 1995. Counselor to patients at Saint Vincent’s Hospital, Harrison, New York, from 1995 until his death in 2000.
