Son of Italian immigrants to Argentina. Entered the seminary in Córdoba, Argentina at age 15, and then studied in Rome, Italy. Ordained on 9 October 1949. Worked as a parish priest in Córdoba with special efforts with children, in the slums, in labour disputes, all the while working to renew zeal for the faith among his people. Auxiliary Bishop of Córdoba and Titular Bishop of Lystra on 12 December 1960. Worked in Vatican Council II in 1964. Bishop of La Rioja, Argentina on 3 July 1968. He became involved in the efforts of the poor to unionize, start worker cooperatives, and put to use lands that were laying fallow as part of enormous estates. This led to Archbishop Angelelli being targeted by the military in the Argentinian Dirty War of kidnappings and bombings and murders. His Cause for Canonization as a martyr has opened.
